Make it eight: Sioux Central girls continue string of conference titles

Thirteen conference championships and a total of 29 medal-winning performances helped the Sioux Central girls claim their eighth straight Northwest Conference track and field title Monday as the Rebels took the championship by more than 100 points over runner-up Schaller-Crestland.

Sioux Central added seven runner-up performances and doubled in 10 events, scoring 233 points on the night. Schaller-Crestland had 116, Alta was a distant third with 70.

"The girls absolutely had a great night running 17 season's best performances to cap off a great regular season. I was very proud with what the girls put together tonight," said Sioux Central head coach Kendall Rachuy.

Fourteen different girls won at least one league title -- nine of Sioux Central's event wins came in individual events, five in relays.

Freshman Rachel Hamilton stole the show, winning four conference titles and breaking the school record in the 800-meter run for the third time. Her time of 2:24.87 is also a conference record in the 800.

Hamilton added wins in the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.74, the distance medley and the 4x800.

Senior Brittny Rebhuhn and junior Brooke Scharn added three event titles apiece.

Rebhuhn won the long jump, the 200-meter dash and the shuttle hurdle relay; Scharn won the 100-meter hurdles, the 400 hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay.

Allie Swanson, Jennifer Rushton, Chandler Johannsen and Callie Buske won two conference titles apiece; Jordan Buse, Brandy Richards, Rachel Peterson, Grace Rehnstrom, Brianna Ehlers, Morgan Walker and Janae Smith all claimed one event title.

Walker, Johannsen and Buse produced conference championships in individual events.

Walker won the 400-meter dash in 1:05.19, Buse ran to a winning time of 13:27.01 in the 3,000 and Johannsen posted a jump of 5-0 to win the high jump, an event in which she holds a school record.
