Mark Wakefield and Joel Kaldahl produced the decisive win at No. 2 doubles Monday, helping Spencer turn the tables on Storm Lake with a 5-4 victory over the Tornadoes.
"We played the same team, but we had a lot of different matchups today. It came down to No. 2 doubles -- that's a match we lost last time around -- and this time we won it in a super tiebreak. It was the last match off the court, so it was the difference," said Spencer coach Joe Steele.
The win sets up what will likely be a second-place showdown at Le Mars on Monday. Spencer improves to 5-4, 5-3 in the Lakes Conference with the win. Cherokee holds control over the top spot in the league.
Like their last meeting with Storm Lake, the Tigers reeled in three singles wins, picking up victories from Waylon Glienke, Kaldahl and Drake Swanson in the final three singles spots.
Glienke and Swanson also added a win over Tommy Nasirichampang and Sheldon Lovan at No. 3 doubles.
"Both Waylon Glienke and Joel Kaldahl had good nights, particularly in singles. They did a nice job of being more consistent than their opponents," Steele said. "I've also been feeling like our doubles play has been getting better since the beginning of the year."
