The Spencer boys golf team is already getting used to calling itself No. 1.
The top-ranked team in Class 3A won its third tournament title of the season and remained unbeaten Saturday, winning the Storm Lake Invitational by 13 strokes over Class 2A No. 1 Carroll Kuemper.
"Saturday was a great day. We had four outstanding scores, and even our five and six scores were very respectable," said Spencer coach Steve Bomgaars. "Obviously we've had great performances out of individuals this year, but it's been a true team effort from guys stepping up out of all parts of the lineup.
The Tigers shot 306, a combined 18-over-par for their top four individuals. Carroll Kuemper scored a 319, Carroll shot 332, Algona carded a 338 and Cherokee also shot 338, finishing fifth by tiebreaker in the 12-team field.
Craig Cunningham won his first 18-hole tournament of the season, using a 3-under-par 33 on the back-9 at Lake Creek Country Club to propel himself to a 2-over-par-74. It was the senior's second straight meet win.
"Craig's back-9 was somewhat reminiscent of his round at the Lakes Invitational," said Bomgaars. "That shows what kind of competitor Craig Cunningham is. He finds another gear when he meets adversity. He bears down and refocuses."
Jay Monahan was the tournament's runner-up medalist with a 75, shooting 38 on the front and 37 on the back. Monahan and Cunningham have been the medalist and runner-up in four of Spencer's last five events.
Joe Clark added a 78 for the Tigers with a 38 on the front-9 and a 40 on the back; Marc Regnier carded a 79, shooting 39 on the front and 40 on the back.
Michael Clark and Jordan Bates each added 81s. The duo would have tied for best score on eight of the 12 teams.
