Funeral services for Norma Anderson, 87, of Spencer, will be held Friday, April 17, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Spencer. Rev. Jon Pausley will officiate the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Mrs. Anderson passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Norma Ruth Anderson, the daughter of Herbert and Grace Bertha (Whitmore) Van Hooser, was born on Jan. 24, 1922, in Nemaha. She was raised in the Webb area where she also attended school and graduated from Webb High School. Following high school she attended the Open Bible Institute in Des Moines for three years and then enrolled in the Broadlawns School of Nursing also in Des Moines, graduating in 1948. After graduation, Norma went to Liberia in West Africa and was a missionary nurse until 1956. Norma returned to Spencer in 1958, and was employed at the Spencer Hospital as a registered nurse. She worked there for 21 years before she retired in 1979.
On Nov. 22, 1970, Norma married Lester C. Anderson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Following their marriage, they made their home in Spencer, where she continued to work at the hospital. Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she also taught Sunday school and Bible studies. She was also a past member of the District Nurses Association.
Norma moved to the Highlands in 1991 after her husband's death and lived their until 2007, when she moved into the St. Luke Lutheran Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers: Herbert and Harold.
Norma is survived by her step-son, Darwin Anderson and his wife, Ouida Ann of Albuquerque, N.M.; her step-daughter, Carolyn June Brown and her husband, Richard of Tehachapi, Calif.; and six step-grandchildren.
