Wednesday's national tax day, tea party government spending protests weren't limited to state capitols and major metropolitan areas.
About 275 people filled in around a makeshift podium on the courthouse square in Spencer for a local version of the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) Party. The event was organized by Kris Thiessen of Everly, who co-owns White Glove, a janitorial business in Spencer.
The TEA Party protest rallies were staged as a backlash to the Obama Administration's massive federal spending and bailout programs designed to shake the county out of its economic rut.
Placards peppered the audience and participants made a line past a row of tables lined with petitions and patriotic bunting. One petition, destined for Des Moines, asked state leaders not to accept federal bailout funds and stimulus money.
"Let our voices be heard," Thiessen of Everly told the crowd. "Stop the spending."
Iowa's Democratic Gov. Chet Culver dismissed that notion in a preemptive statement Tuesday. He said Iowa is well-positioned to work its way out of the recession by making smart use of federal economic recovery funds and creating its own infrastructure program, called I-JOBS.
"The combination of President Obama's economy recovery plan and our own state efforts through I-JOBS means Iowa can lead the nation in turning around the economy and putting an end to the recession," Culver said.

"There are similar events like this today across the country and show that Americans are concerned about the future of our country," Anderson read. "I commend you for your conviction and dedication to the causes of freedom and liberty."
King said the current administration has ignored the lessons of the 1930s.
"The current economic philosophy in Washington is straight out of the failed, Great Depression playbook," Anderson read. "We are making the very same mistakes made in the 1930s. We tried massive government spending back then to solve the economic problems of that era. Today, we call that result the Great Depression. Nowhere in the history of the world, has more government spending actually resulted in sustained economic growth."
A microphone was passed around to audience members who voiced displeasure about topics ranging from pork barrel spending to the growing deficit.
"I have a 4-year-old here today, it's her birthday -- she's already $30,000 in debt," said Kris McDermott of Spencer, who was with her daughter Maureen at the Tax Day TEA Party protest.
Other petitions called on state lawmakers to uphold Iowa's status as a right-to-work state. The status secures the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not to join or financially support a union. Critics of right-to-work status argue that non-union employees don't pay their "fair share," yet still reap the fruits of union-employer negotiations.
Another petition asked state lawmakers to preserve a provision that allows Iowans to deduct the federal tax asking from their state income tax filings.

The protest remained orderly, with mostly appropriate comments. It concluded with a march toward Spencer's downtown business district.
"When I started this, I had no idea what I was doing," Thiessen said. "I thought 'if I had 50 here I would be lucky.' Then my expectations grew to 100, then last night I was thinking 'if I have 200 there I'll be happy.' So 275-300? I'm thrilled."

It sure seems like Maureen had quite the birthday party. Happy birthday Mo!! Sorry about the irresponsible spending of our parents' generation though, that's a bummer. Oh well, let me know what kind of cake you had the next time I see you.
If people spent more time trying to get through this crisis instead fighting and whining we'd be a lot better off. It took the last administration 8 years to put us in this position so we won't get out of it overnight. Save big money and stop giving illegals free health care. If it is given away, it should be to our people.
The biggest trick conservatives/GOP ever did was to get the middle class to vote against their own best interests.
Thanks to President Obama and the Democratic Congress, 95 percent of Americans will get a tax cut this year. No one -- not even the wealthiest 1 percent -- will have to pay higher income taxes until 2011.
In 2008, just 1 year, just 25 people, all hedge fund managers earned over a total of $11,000,000,000.00. That's 11 billion. Hedge fund managers are well known for taking their pay in the form of capital gains so that they only pay the 15% capital gains tax, not any income or payroll taxes.
Everyone's told to invest for the long term but them the tax laws are written to promote just the opposite, pay 15% after only 1 year of investing. Newt wants it to be 0%. I'm sure the hedge fund managers would love that.
Last Aug. a gov't GOA report found that 2/3 of corporations paid zero taxes.
So given all this, shouldn't the t-baggers be protesting against those that don't uphold their share of the social contract we call the United States of America while taking advantage of all the opportunities it provides?
I'll say it slowly & loudly.....YOU ARE GETTING A TAX CUT! NOT A TAX INCREASE!
By removing the burden of health care for 45 million uninsured, it'll help America.
By removing the burden of employer paid health care for employees, it'll help business.
By removing the dependend on foreign energy it'll help America and business.
By educating people it'll help America and business.
Do you t-baggers realize that as jobs are created and income increases, tax revenues will increase? Not to mention the population always increasing adding to those that pay taxes. With this combination of increased revenue, plus making sure those that evade taxes (as detailed in my earlier post) pay their fair share, taxes for everyone can remain reasonable.
Oh, and BTW, you are the future that people were worried about 20 yrs ago having to pay the national debt. 20 yrs before that it was your parents that were the future generation your grandparents worried about. Those fears/predictions never came about and the current ones won't either.
As far as revolution, we just had an election and the people spoke. That was the time that people could enact a peaceful change of direction for the country. They chose this path. Or are you advocating violent revolution because you don't want to wait another 4 yrs? Admit it if you are.
As far as demonstrations under Bush, there were plenty, world wide and in the hundreds of thousands, dwarfing this pre arranged Fox News sponsered joke. It was shown on Fox as the "FNC TAX TEA BAG DAY", you know, like "TOSITOS FIESTA BOWL".
I find numerous instances of irony in this whole situation. This is possibly the largest gathering of misplaced anger I've seen in Spencer. I can't imagine that everyone out there screaming even knew what they were there for. I applaud everyone for at least getting involved, but that does not excuse ignorance in thought or on picket signs. To all the justified, yet ridiculous sentiments about dealings with China; Do any people with those signs shop at Wal Mart? To everyone with comments about income taxes; You act like this is the first time in your life you've had to pay them. These are the same people who claim that paying their taxes makes them patriotic. I also find that the word Socialism has been branded with nothing but negative connotation, so much to the point we don't even think about what it means to say that. The 21st century has no place for any idea other than equality and unity. To think anything other is nothing but a narcissistic approach to the same problems that have been plaguing us forever. You can't yell "equality" and not be willing to share or sacrifice. I would also expect that everyone out at the courthouse makes over 200,000 dollars annually. Most people don't realize that the tax increase applies mainly to that percentage of the population. Most families are finding they are making 8 to 13 dollars more per paycheck. That's because they actually received a tax break of that much. Which for me, adds up to saving more than I got from our last "stimulus check". It is also designed to be more sustained. Don't get me wrong here. I totally disagree with the spending of money to bail out people that screwed us over to begin with. Which leaves me with my last point. To those who are worried about government taking over our financial institutions; Yes, in a sense they are. On the same token, these are the very institutions that failed on their own by means shady business ethics. They are the ones needing the money, so let's stop going to bat on their behalf by acting like they are "our" institutions. Don't put trust in major corporations of any sort. Especially monetary institutes. To think that this is the result of one administration or that this snuck up on us is ludicrous. But to think we can't change this ourselves is also just as crazy. We can't criticize something if we are going to rely on it. The answer lies with us, not on any "higher" form of control. There has to be a point when we quit bickering and fighting our government, and instead treat it with abandonment. The main reason government fails is because it doesn't relate to people on a human level. The main reason people fail, is because we don't relate to people on a human level. It's time to realize our true potential. It is our ethical responsibility as conscious human beings to help each other out.
I am so impressed by the obvious intelligence, articulate reasoning and good will of the previous posting individuals. To read the placards of those at the TEA party, I was worried the likes of Obama bashers had taken root in Iowa. Bravo to all the sage writing on this subject. Expat Iowan in Ontario, Canada
Levi - The only irony in your post is the contradictory nature of its entire content. First of all, people don't show up to a cause they are passionate about because of "misplaced anger". They all know why they were there yesterday. Read the article. They are tired of the direction Washington is leading us. Their anger is justified, and they are well versed in their reasoning. To "helped myself" and others who think that the $8.00 a week is going in their pocket. Get a clue. First off, the $8.00 is temporary. Smoke and mirrors. You are paying at least $8.00 more in taxes each week, just not income tax. Your property tax, cigarette tax, sales tax, gas tax, sewer tax, water tax, cell phone tax, and every other tax you can name is climbing higher and higher. Before you get on your soapbox about the cigarette tax, be thankful for it, because if everyone quit smoking tomorrow, the gov't would then have to tax milk (or something else) to make up for the tax revenue they lost from tobacco sales. People who think the government can spend their way out of a recession must also think that you need a shovel to get out of a hole. Keep digging!
Read Me - Of course their anger is justified. I'm just as angry, believe me. I'm simply not wasting my energy blaming the insanity of the situation on a presidential administration alone. If you're going to tell me that my entire post is contradictory, please specify which part you're talking about. I will try to clarify. I'm also not entirely sure what you are getting at with the tax comment. The $8.00 is over the course of years, so please define temporary. If by smoke and mirrors you mean that it's just being taken from me through some other tax, that is true, yes. But I would have to pay those taxes regardless, so I'd rather have 8 more dollars to put toward those taxes rather than have to pay them anyways plus the 8 I would have normally paid. People have every right to be passionate about this situation. That's why I applauded them for showing up, but the arguments were either based on incorrect information, or some sentiment that has nothing to do with the bail out. I'm all about activism, but I hate seeing passionate people yelling weightless phrases that don't even make sense. Every bit of the bitterness towards the bail out I understand and also share, but we need to make sure we don't let that cloud our ability to think or see our own way out. I'm not going to rehash my previous comment. I think it explains itself, but whatever you think is ironic or contradictory, please let me know and I will be happy to either retract, re-word, or elaborate.
read me, "Your property tax, cigarette tax, sales tax, gas tax, sewer tax, water tax, cell phone tax, and every other tax you can name is climbing higher and higher."
This has always been true. The difference now is that the only tax being cut, income tax, is being cut for 95% of Americans, not just for the wealthiest 5%. No one complained when Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest resulted in increased taxes in other areas.
Clay County 2000 census lists 17,372 people.
275 of that represents just .0158% of the people or 1 in 63. Pretty small but still a higher turnout than say, the Phoenix, AZ metro area, which had 5,000 out of 4.3 million or 0.00116% or 1 in 860 show up. But all in all, % wise, way smaller than the worldwide, hundreds of thousands that protested Bush.
Wow, look at all those Tea baggers - oops, I mean McCain voters.
The ultimate irony: people using manufactured outrage over high taxes right after bills pass that lowers taxes for probably 99% of all the residents in the town spending money on tea bags to "protest" wasteful spending.
How incredibly stupid.
I can Fix this mess FAST ! STOP THE SPENDING OF MY MONEY NOW ! Get to work to support your own need ! Just wait when all the bills come due and You don't Have a job to pay for it!
What Obama is doing is just like what Hilter did to take over German .
You want government control medical ? go to a V A Hospital. And See how long it take to see a doctor !
YOUR MONEY IS GOVERNMENT POWER!!!!! Don't you think you can spend it better ?
What ever the Government can give to you It can take it from you and then charge it to you.
What is the government for? And what roll should it play in your life? WE have GOD GIVEN RIGHT! IT DOESN"T COME FROM THE GOVERNMENT!
savage nation - What is with the random string of messages? I'm not quite sure what the intent is, or what you're really saying. Are these your words, or googled government cliches? The first post I thought was sarcasm, but now I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be thinking. Are you opposing healthcare provided by government means, even though you use the V.A.? I'm pretty sure the wait is no less in a public facility. Does this mean you're willing to give up that benefit? I fully support Veterans getting government healthcare, but does that mean average citizens shouldn't be able to afford it? I have never had insurance, luckily I haven't had too much reason to go to the doctor. However, it would have been nice if I didn't have to pay 1,000 dollars when I broke my wrist just to get two crappy casts put on. Now I don't care if the government ever does a thing for me or not. It's not like they've done a heck of a lot of positive things for me anyway. I'm just curious what you are really trying to get across here.
I am a proud American who is proud to live in America. I may not agree with everything being done but it's the administration of the last 8 years that put us in this boat not the administration of the last 3 months. If you don't agree with what is going on in this country or you'd rather complain instead of doing something to help the situation, feel free to move on to another country. May I suggest Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, Venezuela...............
I wonder how many of the protesters actually voted? Where were your supporters on election day?
So, mistert, you really believe it was the last 8 years that put our country in this situation? I don't think so. Our country began its tailspin at least 50 years ago. It began about the time our government took prayer out of school, when we allowed abortion to become an acceptable choice for birth control, and when we became cowards too greedy to stand up for what is right and just. Both political parties are to blame, so don't slam a bunch of concerned citizens because they feel strongly about an issue. This demonstration and all the others across the country could be the beginning of the reform that we have all been looking for. By the way I was there Wednesday, and I did vote last November.
This keeps getting more and more concerning to me. Maybe this will cause people to disregard this, and my previous comments, but I am in shock watching anyone from previous generations acting like they had it right at one point. I'm only 21, but every year growing up all I heard was the future is up to me. It is the youth's future. Even at the rally, one of the leading arguments was the concern about children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren having to deal with the mistakes of prior generations. I am officially more frightened and awestruck now than I ever was when I read comments from people that honestly and whole heartedly believe that all of the financial, economic, environmental, and war driven problems, complete with a world that hates us, are all to blame on prayer and women's rights issues. I fully support people's beliefs and faiths being a part of their lives. Even though I don't subscribe to a particular faith, this is part of the reason why. There ends up being no respect for anything other than what one person believes, and in a world of 6 billion people, there is no longer room for intolerance. Also, while I agree that prayer should be allowed in schools, for anyone who wishes to do so no matter what religion or what you pray, I also believe that we need to start taking responsibility for our actions and our lives and stop expecting anything other than human response to be accountable for both good and bad. Abortion and lack of prayer in school are not to blame for any financial or environmental circumstance we are in now. It is true it has been happening for a long time, and no one administration or party is to blame. On the same token, unless we can decipher the difference between people's rights, and peoples imposers, we will get nowhere new. I fully believe in everyone being able to live life how they see fit as long as it is causing no harm. That however, does not mean we can expect everyone to live the same way we choose to. If we go on believing that, we will meet life with nothing but opposition and no results. It is insane to think we can keep flip-flopping the same principles and politics we always have and expect something different. Things were never perfect, so to act like there was a time when things were great and done "the good ole' American way", is to have a nostalgia for a past that never happened.
levi944, I'll clarify. It's not just prayer in school or the Roe v. Wade decision that that has contributed to our nation's trouble, but social permissiveness and greed that has been allowed to happen.
Sorry, I can't agree that Socialism is the answer either. If I work hard and make a little money, I feel I should be able to share with whom I see fit, like my church, or the YMCA, but not through additional taxation for socialistic programs.
Culture Warrior - Agreed. You should be able to do what you please with your money. Nobody is stopping you. Federal taxes have always been there, so this is nothing new. Taxes have constantly increased, in one form or another, no matter the administration. If it's money you're talking about, have you calculated how this will affect you personally and how much it will cost you? Does it make it harder for you to live? If it's giving you're talking about, do you not give to your church or the YMCA now because the government took any spare money away? Even if it does cut into finances, if it's truly about caring and giving, isn't sacrifice not only inevitable but honorable? This should not keep you from giving. And if it's government digging into your pockets that is most important to you, then why do you condone the acts of one party over another? Taxes are a part of the system no matter who is in charge. Maybe I should return the favor and clarify as well. I'm not suggesting pure socialism is the answer. It is too broad of a term to even use in this situation. Nor do I suggest that communism, or capitalism for that matter is the whole answer. I don't believe in government being, such as it is, anything other than a problem generator. The fact that anyone speaks and acts on behalf of 303,824,640 people, is ludicrous to me. You said greed was one of the problems leading up to where we are today. I agree whole-heartedly. Greed however, does not only stand on a national or corporate level. It stands on a personal level more than anything. I suppose the rest of my argument will be irrelevant to this subject as it has more to do with philosophies and personal ethics, rather than a solid truth. I guess our versions of greed are two separate ideas. To me, selective giving is nothing more than greed itself, disguised to make it easier on the giver's moral conscience. To give solely to the already well-to-do, in place of giving to people without basic needs, is in my view pointless giving at best. For what good did you create by giving to something that was sustainable on its own, rather than to a person in need? To decipher a difference and choose between the two, is to acknowledge and still condemn the lesser based on preconceived notions. Again this is just my opinion. Just something to ponder while I think about the things you have said.
Appreciate your comments levi944, It seems to me that we symbolize polar opposites that want the same thing. Let's hope those we represent can work together to get the results that are most beneficial for future generations of our great nation.
Agreed Cultural Warrior. Thank you. It's good to see people truly wanting to be involved on any level. :)
