Services for Leona I. Schulz, 101 of Emmetsburg will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2009 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Dennis Angland will officiate the service.

The visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Interment will take place at Laurens Cemetery.

Leona Irene Schulz passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, surrounded by family and her pastor.

Born Leona Irene Felsing Aug. 28, 1907 in Miner County (Carthage), S.D., to Dan and Lydia (Stark) Felsing. She was the second oldest of five children.

On Aug. 28, 1935, she married Hans John Schulz at Laurens and four children were born to them, John, Marguerite, Philip and Carol. They farmed many years near Laurens and Winthrop. Leona also worked as a nurse aide.

In 1974 following the death of her husband, she moved to Marathon and later to Emmetsburg, which was home at the time of her death.

She raised and tended gardens, chickens and cows; was an accomplished pump organ musician and seamstress all while raising her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons: John and Philip; brothers: Calvin, Paul, and Urban Felsing; and sister, Adelaide Stroppel.

Leona is survived by her two daughters: Marguerite Brawley and husband, Dick of Emmetsburg, and Carol Felsing Wright and husband, Richard of Deming, N.M.; daughters-in-law: Carol Schulz of Spencer, and Clara Schulz of Woodbridge, Va.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
