Donald Olsen, 78, of Spirit Lake, passed away Friday, April 10, 2009, at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Nemaha Methodist Church.
He was born on Nov. 9, 1930, in Schaller, to Kalmer and Louise (Christiansen) Olsen. They moved to Nemaha shortly after his birth. He loved it there, playing in the streets and wanting to keep every stray dog that came to town. Donnie attended and graduated from the Nemaha High School in 1949, where he was active in every sport.
Donnie was united in marriage to Maxine Shannon on Dec. 1, 1949, at the Nemaha Methodist Church. They were blessed with on daughter, Rachel, and one son, Wylie.
Donnie farmed Wylie and Verna Shannon's farm north of Nemaha. In 1963, he moved to Newell, and owned and operated Olsen Hardware. He was active in the Newell Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed helping with the Centennial.
In 1977, he bought the Ford Dealership in Hartley. In 1993, Donnie suffered three major heart attacks and on Oct. 24, 1995, a stroke that paralyzed his left side.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a loving son, Wylie.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Maxine Olsen of Spirit Lake; a daughter, Rachel Nesheim and her husband, Walter, of Newell; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Mary Lou Carney of Sacramento, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Connie Olsen of Florence, Ariz.
