The charge could carry an enhanced penalty because the alleged crime took place within 1,000 feet of a school. Officers made the arrest at 10:54 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of East Third Street.
Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson said the teenager was selling the prescription drug clonazepam, which is also known under the brand name Klonopin. It is prescribed to people as an anti-depressant.
The names of juveniles are requested, for use in news coverage, when the incident involves the intent to deliver illegal drugs to other teenagers. Lawson said the identity could be available as soon as Wednesday.
"The only reason I want to hold off on this at this time, is that we're not done with him yet," Lawson said. "I don't want to announce him to the world, then all of the sudden: We aren't able to further our investigation. I'll know in a couple of days."
Investigators said the teenager had 13 pills at the time of the arrest. Lawson said the medication may have come from within the household, but did not elaborate further over medical privacy concerns.
"The few kids who didn't turn him down did not consume them," Lawson said. "That was a nice thing to see there. A couple of kids who wound up buying them disposed of them."
The teenager was transported to the Spencer Police Department, processed, released to his parents and referred to juvenile court.

Selling antidepressants? I guess if you're trying to get your friends zoned out and amotivated, that's one way to do it. It's not like antidepressants are happy pills like X or something. Misguided attempt at illegal commerce.
Klonopin is not a antidepressant, It is known as a benzodiazepine such as valium or ativan, highly addictive. And very often abused. Get the facts before it goes to print poeple.
I'm assuming then, summer, that you'll be going in for an application so the world can pick apart your obvious genius.
I'll get a head start. When using a word that begins with a vowel sound, such as antidepressant, it's incorrect to use "a" preceding it. An antidepressant is correct.
It's great that you're so knowledgeable when it comes to prescription drugs -- assuming you didn't find that on Wikipedia -- but, unfortunately, your English and grammar abilities are still stuck in the third grade. Such a sad state of affairs in our country.
I've done some checking and it appears summer is correct. From what I can glean, it can be used to augment other treatments for clinical depression, but it isn't an antidepressant.
No need to worry -- you won't find me behind a pharmacy counter anytime soon. I appreciate the feedback.
