Employers can learn about potential hazards at their worksites and improve their occupational safety and health management systems by using IOSHA's consultation services and training opportunities.
The Lakes Area Employers' Council and Kossuth County (ECI) in conjunction with Iowa Workforce Development is offering two "Ten Hour IOSHA Safety Training Certificate" sessions in May for employers who are interested in promoting safety in their workplace. Both of the training sessions will be led by Mike Whitmore, Compliance Assistance specialist with the Iowa Department of Labor, Iowa Workforce Development.
SHARP and VPP are company recognition programs for safety and health management awarded by the Commissioner of Labor on behalf of the governor of Iowa. Employers should note that this program is completely separate from the OSHA enforcement staff. No citations are issued or penalties proposed, and it is confidential.
The Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course Construction Trades class will meet Tuesday and Wednesday, May 19 and 20; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to noon. The class is at the Iowa Lakes Community College, Spencer location. The $25 per person cost includes program expenses, a light lunch and refreshments.
Topics to be covered include:
* Introduction to OSHA/Inspection Procedures/Safety Training and Programs;
*Hazard Communications (RTK)/Health Hazards;
*PPE/Fire Protective Equipment;
* Tools/Welding;
*Electrical;
* Scaffolds/Fall Protection/Confined Space Entry;
*Excavations;
*Ladders and Stairs;
* and Concrete/Cranes.
The Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course General Industrial class will meet Thursday and Friday, May 21 and 22; Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday, 8 - 11 a.m. The class is at the Iowa Lakes Community College, Spencer location. The $25 per person cost includes program expenses, lunch and refreshments.

* Walking/Working Surfaces/Falls;
* Means of Egress/Fire Protection;
* Ergonomics;
* Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
* Welding/Hazardous Materials;
* Materials Handling/Back Ergonomics;
*Machine Guarding; Electrical;
*Hazard Communication;
and OSHA Recordkeeping.
