Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m., Friday, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Interment will take place at Garfield Cemetery in Webb. Military services will be held following the graveside services.
James passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Spencer Hospital.
James Roy Mills Sr., the son of James "Roy" Mills and Darlene (Boardman) Mills, was born June 2, 1940 at the family home outside of Webb. He spent his entire life in the Webb area. He attended school in Webb and was a member of the class of 1958. He showed hogs and Black Angus cattle at the Clay County Fair. At the age of 18 he took over the family farm business until having to serve in the military. In 1962 he went to serve for the United States Army 728th Military Police Battalion in Korea.
On Jan. 31, 1964 he married Judith (Anderson) at Elk Baptist Church north of Alta. They farmed in the Webb area with his brother Kevin. To this marriage, a son and daughter were born and were an important part of his life. Later he began an excavating company "Mills Construction," where he did dirt work for most of the Webb and surrounding area. Jim and Judy divorced but have remained friends.
His one area of interest was car racing. In 1980 he built and owned a late model car -- No. 10, and would travel all summer long to various tracks in Iowa, Missouri, and Minnesota. In the later years this love of racing was shown with Stacey and Jeremy Mills and their modified cars (10 and 10E). His son, Jimmy also had a hobby stock car the 11M.
Jim had seven grandchildren, and in the past years he spent with his special friend, Elaine Thu. In recent years Jim reunited with his daughter , Caroline Kresal and her family.
He is preceded in death by his father, James "Roy" Mills: nieces: Dawn Wheeler and Pam Holloway; great niece, Mackinley Mills; brothers: Warren Mills and Harvey Mills; and sisters: Wanda Smith and Shirley White.
Jim is survived by his mother, Darlene Mills of Webb; son, James Mills and wife, Nancy of Webb ; daughters: Julie Remmers and husband, Chad of Melvin, and Caroline Kresal of Duluth, Minn.; special friend, Elaine Thu of Webb; seven grandchildren ; brothers: Kevin Mills and wife, Wendy of Marathon, and Bryce Mills of Hot Springs, S.D., and sisters: Karen Franklin and husband, Leland of Odessa, Mo., Colleen Burt and husband, Richard of Urbandale, Kathy Linn of and husband, Jean of Des Moines, and LuAnn Reese and husband, John of Laurens.
