Services for Lela Emma Burkhart, 84 were held on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley. Rev. Dave Ericksen officiated the service.

Interment took place at Harrison Township Cemetery in May City.

Lela passed away March 20, 2009.

Lela Emma Burkhart, the daughter of Otto and Emelie (Kruckenberg) Burkhart was born Oct. 18, 1924, in the Harris Hospital, Osceola County. Her weight was just three pounds. Her childhood was spent near Melvin, and Nevis, Minn. Later, she lived with her family north of Hartley, until 1950, when the town of Hartley became her home with her mother. In 1975, because of her mother's failing health she entered Mann Wing, now called Community Memorial Health Center.

She attended country school at Harrison No. 9 in Osceola County and was home schooled through grade eight. She passed the Iowa State Test and attended the Osceola County Eighth Grade graduation class of one hundred and eleven to receive her graduation diploma, in the Sibley Park where the event was held.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Myrtle Hasara.

Lela is survived by her brother, Werner Burkhart of Titonka; and a sister, Lena Hoffman and wife, Richard of Marshalltown; and several nephews and nieces.

Arrangements were handled by Warner Funeral Home in Hartley.
