Elementary artists sought for AOG Dewey project

Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Dewey Readmore Books, the library cat, has been a part of childhood trips to the Spencer Public Library for many years. Coordinators at Arts on Grand are hoping to have the children of Spencer and elsewhere create their own artwork to honor the memorable cat.

The Arts on Grand Art Project of the cat, Dewey Readmore Books, is open to all elementary school students in the area and beyond. Students will create their own personal representations of Dewey Readmore Books, the Spencer Public Library Cat, to be displayed on a wall space at Arts on Grand during the Spencer schools art shows in March, April and May. For a look at Dewey you can log on to deweyreadmorebooks.com or stop by the Spencer Public Library.

The artwork can be in any medium: ink, markers, crayons, paints, pastels, pencils, colored pencils. The size of the artwork can be from 8 ½ inches by 11 inches up to 11 inches by 17 inches.

The works can be mailed to Arts on Grand at 408 N. Grand, Spencer, Iowa 51301 or brought into Arts on Grand any time Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., until May 15, 2009. Include artwork, name and address of artist, phone number or email, and name of elementary school.

People in the community can come and view the exhibit and vote for their favorite cat artwork. People's Choice awards will be presented to the "Best of Show" and second and third place.

Some of the Dewey pictures will be displayed in the Art Barn during the 2009 run of the Clay County Fair.
