Funeral services for Allen Ravn, 66, of Spencer will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Chuck Kellogg will officiate the service.

Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Military services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 - American Legion following graveside services.

Allen passed away Friday, March 13, 2009 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Allen Earl Ravn was born May 15, 1942 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Gordon R. and Helen Ravn, the second of five children. Al was raised in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1960, where he played football and was an avid wrestler.

Following his graduation, Al joined the US Navy and served four years, two in the Vietnam Conflict. Following his discharge, he went to work for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Cedar Falls.

He married Vesta Grove on Oct. 2, 1971. Blessings of their marriage, the greatest joys of Al's life were his children, Nicholas and Emily. A third child, Carrie, was called back to Heaven.

The Ravn family relocated to Spencer, when Al was promoted to Postal Supervisor of the Spencer Post Office in 1981. He later became Postmaster of the Emmetsburg Post Office in 1990, where he served until his retirement in 2000. Al and Vesta are longtime members of Grace United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie; his parents, Helen and Gordon; his father-in-law, Clarence Grove; and brother-in-law, Wendell Scheel.

Al is survived by his wife, Vesta, of Spencer; children: Nick of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Emily, of Odenton, Md; brothers: Mike Ravn and wife, Judy and Steven Ravn and wife, Danette -- all of Cedar Falls; sisters: Judy Scheel of Lakeside, Calif., and Susan Payne and husband, Dennis of Waterloo; mother-in-law, Veva Grove of Fairbank; and sister-in-law, Frances Grove Erickson and husband, Dale of Chicago, Ill.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Al's name.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
