| (Photo submitted) Summers at the Scharnberg Pond beach should be a little more pleasant once a beach refurbishing project is completed. The Clay County Conservation Department is expected to haul in 1,500 tons of sand as part of an effort to undo some erosion. |
The little, plastic shovels and pails probably aren't going to do the trick for this beach sculpting project.
Clay County Conservation Director Dan Heissel told members of the Clay County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that the county park has received a $7,000 Community Foundation Grant to refurbish the beach at Scharnberg Pond.
Heissel was looking for funding because the former gravel pit was reverting back to its old form near Everly.
"The need for sand was becoming quite evident," he said. "It's pretty much washed down to bare gravel."
The 1,500 tons of sand alone represents a $7,000 expense. When applied, it should give the entire beach a fresh 12-inch-thick layer of the grainy stuff.
"We're hoping to start within the next month," Heissel said. "We'll have it done before May, when the park opens."
The conservation department also plans some landscaping along with a rope and buoy system for the swimming area. Total cost of the upgrades is $14,000.
The Clay County Conservation Board is expected to earmark $5,000 for its share of the project. The Oneota Conservation Foundation is looking into the potential of a $2,000 grant for the upgrades.

Im very pleased to see them improve the park. I've lived in this area for 29 years and have enjoyed many wonderful weekends on that beach with my kids. Keep up the great work
