Positively Spencer Youth is hosting a St. Patrick's Day weekend dance beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday at the ballroom of the Clay County Regional Events Center.
"There are certainly a lot of themes surrounding St. Patrick's Day -- a lot of that having to do with partying and other things that can be unhealthy and not safe," said Amy Simpson, director of Positively Spencer Youth. "This is hopefully a little bit better alternative to some of the other things kids could be doing. We work hard to provide some activities that have a positive message with that."
Saturday night's dance is one of a series of events recommended by the students who are the focus of Positively Spencer Youth.
"The idea of doing dances during the year is something they came up with, so that's where it started," Simpson said. "We actually had a dance in January that went really well, so we thought it would be fun to try to have another one yet this school year."
Tickets are $5, and students who wear green to the dance will get a free soda. Simpson said students should enjoy the atmosphere as well.
"We did listen to feedback about which deejay they would like," Simpson said.
The Positively Spencer Youth director also put out a call to adults who would be willing to serve as chaperones. The dance will last until midnight.
"This dance is for students in grades 9-12, and if students in surrounding school districts would like to attend, they're welcomed, too. It's not necessarily only for Spencer students," she said.
