Activities Director Roger Johnson is optimistic about the recovery for a Spencer High School boys basketball player who was taken off the court by stretcher Monday night at the Spencer Fieldhouse.

Taylor Chapman was injured after a collision occurred following a fast break lay-up with 4:39 to play in a Class 3A tournament opener between Algona and Spencer.

"Taylor Chapman actually had scored a basket and then as he was going to head down and go to the other end, him and an Algona player inadvertently, basically, ran into each other," Johnson said.

Chapman received immediate assistance from the school district's trainer, Kevin Carlson.

"I appreciate the help of Dr. David Robison, who was a fan at our game, and Don Pfaffenbach, who is an EMT at the hospital," Johnson said. "Both of those gentlemen came to the floor and assisted Kevin. At that time, it was determined that we needed to bring the ambulance out to transport Taylor to the hospital."

Chapman was flown by helicopter to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

"I've talked to Taylor a little bit today," Johnson said. "We've had some of his classmates and his teammates over to visit with him. He had a neck injury. Talking with the parents, it looks like he'll have to spend a few days in the hospital, but it looks like he'll be able to make a full recovery."

Johnson has been an activities director for nine years. It is the most serious injury situation he recalls during an athletic competition.

"Mike (Chapman, Taylor's dad) and Taylor and his mom, Peggy, would like to thank, already, the community of Spencer and all of the people associated with sending so many wishes of support, prayers, messages -- the outpouring has overwhelmed them," Johnson said.

Spencer Activities Director Roger Johnson said Taylor Chapman will be recovering at Avera McKennan Hospital for the next few days.
