Board continues budget discussions, preparations for Saturday hearing

Friday, February 20, 2009
Due to the late conclusion of Thursday night's Spencer school board meeting, check out a review of what occurred during this work session in Saturday's Daily Reporter.

During this meeting, the board reviewed the "additional" budget packages being considered for 2009-10 reduction, input received on each, and then created an initial ranking of them. With Superintendent Greg Ebeling's recommendation to cut $693,000 from next year's budget in hand, school board members followed up Thursday night by setting their own reduction amount for 2009-10.

The board's budget package rankings will be available at central office and on the district's Web site today and during a 10 a.m. public hearing on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Conference Room B of the central administrative offices, located at 23 E. Seventh St.Other dates to keep in mind, as they relate to the Spencer school budget process, include:

* 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the board room at central office: The board will make adjustments to the budget package rankings following feedback received during Saturday's public hearing.

* 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the board room at central office: The board is scheduled to act on 2009-10 budget reductions, early retirements and a budget guarantee resolution for 2009-10.

A look at the proposed cuts

This chart includes the budget package recommendations being considered in Spencer's budget reduction process. The order in which they are ranked is based on Superintendent Greg Ebeling's rankings. Rankings by both district administration and a volunteer community commitee are also committed. All items ranked 13 and lower, below the black line, are the programs that the superintendent has suggested be cut to reach the $693,000 mark. The public is invited to take part in the district's budget hearing at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Spencer central administrative office, located at 23 E. Seventh St.
