Edith Thomas, 89, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at First Congregational Church in Spencer. Rev. Tom Van Tassell will officiate the 11 a.m. service. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

Casket bearers will include Jeff Thomas, Walter Thomas, Drew Pohar, Seth Thomas, Connor Thomas and Darrin Pohar.

Mrs. Edith Irene Thomas, the daughter of Paul and Caroline (Sindt) Carstensen, was born July 5, 1919 in Clay County. She was raised on a farm near Everly and attended the Everly schools and graduated from high school there.

She married Thomas Thomas on April 18, 1942 at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Following their marriage, they made their home in Spencer. Edith was a mother of six; she also worked a few years at Nelson Jewelry in Spencer.

She was an active member of the First Congregational Church and a 50-year member of the P.E.O. Chapter, where she had served as president.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas, of Spencer; their six children: Pam and Chuck Pohar of Spencer, Mary and Jerry Beck of Spencer, Lori Thomas of Spirit Lake, Walter and Melanie Thomas of Council Bluffs, John and Marie Thomas of Everly, and Jeff Thomas of Spencer; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
