A man wearing a ski mask and armed with a knife allegedly robbed the Casey's General Store, located on the corner of 11th Avenue West and West 18th Street at approximately 9:12 p.m. Monday night. The investigation continues after the man fled on foot.

Nobody was reported injured in the armed robbery.

"We knew something like this happening could be a possibility," said Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson, who noted the rare nature of such incidents in the community.

Lawson couldn't recall the details of the last armed robbery in Spencer. "It's been several years since we've had something like this. It's probably been 7-10 years since the last once. It could even be longer that that."

According to information associated with the investigation, the lone male subject, described as a dark-skinned male wearing a dark, puffy (down-filled) coat and black ski mask, entered the store and ordered the two employees present to open the cash register. Cash was then removed and the suspect fled on foot.

The officers that responded to the call shut the store down for the remainder of the night. Casey's opened at its regular time on Tuesday morning.
