Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
James passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 at Spencer Hospital.
James Ray "J.R." Getting was born in Sanborn, Iowa on Aug. 1, 1937 to Leslie and Margret (Pippinger) Getting. He was baptized on Nov. 5, 1937 at the Methodist Church in Sanborn. Jim attended school in Sanborn and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1955. After high school, Jim continued his education for two years at Morningside College in Sioux City where he played football. Jim then attended the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration in June 1961. During the summer time, he worked for Graves Construction building bridges and roads. After graduating from college, Jim worked as a Certified Public Accountant in Carroll.
On Sept. 9, 1962 Jim married DyAnn Tibbetts at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. In 1963, he returned to Hartley where he drove a truck and was a livestock buyer for Getting & Son in Hartley. Jim opened his own accounting practice in 1966 in Spencer where he continued to practice for the remaining years of his life.
On Oct, 7, 2006 Jim was very proud to be inducted into the Morningside College Hall of Fame as a member of the 1956 North Central Conference Championship Football Team. Jim was a Boy Scout leader for many years and enjoyed all the outdoor activities of the Scouts, especially summer camp. Jim was a past Master of the Onyx Lodge in Sanborn, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Spencer and Eastern Star Chapter No. 116. Jim was a member of the ABU BEKR Shrine, Spencer Area Shrine Club, and the Spencer ATV Corp with whom he participated in parades during the summer.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley James; and his parents.
James is survived by his wife of 46 years, DyAnn of Spencer; his children: Daniel Getting and wife, Candice of Spencer, Thomas Getting of Spencer, Michael Getting of Simi Valley, Calif., and Melissa Busch and husband, Scott of Spencer; four grandchildren; siblings: Maurice "Red" Getting and wife, Suzie, and Leslee "Susie" Stanley and husband, Don of Hartley; and a brother-in-law Gary Tibbetts and wife, Gerri of Spirit Lake.
Jim will live on in others through his donation to the Iowa Donor network.
