Local company acquires spec building for expansion

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
A long-time Spencer based company, Arnold Motor Supply, a part of The Arnold Group of Companies that include The Merrill Company, is expanding in Spencer. This week, the company acquired the 20,250 square foot spec building located at Technical Park South in west Spencer, from Spencer Industries Foundation (SIF).

Dennis Spooner, managing partner of The Arnold Group of Companies, said they expect to begin work immediately on getting the building ready for occupancy. Once that phase is completed, the company plans on adding five to six new jobs. "We will utilize the additional building for our Industrial Coatings Division," said Spooner. "It will include a blending facility, a training facility for our equipment division called Arnold Group Equipment, and office space for both entities which are now located in Sioux City and at the Arnold Motor Supply auto parts store on South Grand."

Arnold Motor Supply has been based in Spencer since 1927. With facilities in five states in the Midwest, they serve the automotive replacement parts industry. They employ over 550 people, of which approximately 86 work in Spencer at the warehouse and the parts store. The new training center will bring customers from around the Midwest for training on the company's paint systems, Industrial Coatings procedures, and other automotive and industrial related matters.

Kathy Evert, president of the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation, said, "The sale of the Spencer spec building and an expansion of a local company is great news and further demonstrates how important it is to recognize the investments and contributions of our existing employers. Spec buildings in Spencer, and around the state, have been good marketing tools to attract new industries and new investments by existing industries, creating new jobs."

The spec building was a partnership between Cornbelt Power, Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, the City of Spencer, and SIF. The partners each contributed cash to the development of the first few lots in Technical Park South and the two spec buildings, one now occupied by Johnston Automotive. Cornbelt Power and Iowa Lakes Electric also provided low-interest financing of the building for SIF.

"Spencer has a long and successful history of spec buildings; they have been a key part of the economic development marketing of the community," said Evert. The Iowa Lakes Corridor Development helped market the building and provided building options for Arnold Motor Supply consideration.

The community support and cooperation of your electric providers is just one of many reasons we are looking to relocate our business to Spencer. We are an established nationwide distributor of flags located in Salina, Kansas. Our Electric provider(Westar Energy) does more to keep new business away from Salina, and even to make well established business in Salina(like ours) to take the close look at relocating our business and families to your community.Like I stated earlier this article shows just one of several reason we will most likely relocate to Spencer within the next year(hopefully by Spring or early summer of 2009).Your winters are much colder then Salina, Kansas but your community is warm-hearted. And for a family owned and operated business like our, it really means a lot and played a big role in the site selection for our relocation.
