Kenneth Stengel was born Jan. 29, 1917 in Mauston (Summit) and graduated from High School in Mauston. He then was involved in the CCC camps and later was employed with the Davey Tree Company throughout the east. He joined the Navy in Milwaukee Sept. 26, 1940 and was assigned to several ships that were involved in battles in Pearl Harbor and other South Pacific combat missions. He was in the vicinity when Japan surrendered to the US.
He was employed with Civil Service in several western states. He worked at Edwards AFB, CA in Research and Development supporting NASA. He was actively involved in starting the Air Force Academy in Colorado as chief of buying division. He finished his career at age 57 at Hill AFB in Utah. He then moved onto 12 acres of land in Mauston and spent winters in Florida, Texas or Arizona with wife, Lois.
He has since resided at Terrace Heights where he met and married Mildred.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Martha (Mattie) Stengel; infant brother, Roger; his wife, Lois; and sister, Florence Dierking.
Kenneth is survived by wife, Mildred (Millie) Clark Haight; three children: Ronald K Stengel and wife, Pat, Bruce Stengel and wife, Linda, and Loris Brady and husband, Rick; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Blanche Hemauer; brother, Preston Stengel; three step-children: Janet Lange and husband, Fred, Jo Sarling, and Christi Williams and husband, Sam; eight step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers and plants, contributions may be made to the family and will be distributed to various charities.
