Johnson, May among state leaders

Wednesday, December 10, 2008
DES MONIES -- State Senator David Johnson has again been named ranking member of the Agriculture Committee as well as the Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittee for the 83rd Iowa General Assembly, which convenes Jan. 12, 2009.

"This is a great opportunity to serve my Northwest Iowa constituents and help lead the state in addressing our future challenges," said Johnson, a Republican from Ocheyedan.

In addition to his legislative work on state farm issues, Johnson is in his third year as president of State Agriculture and Rural Leaders, a U.S.-Canada non-partisan coalition of state and provincial lawmakers who focus on rural policy.

In his 10 years in the Iowa Legislature, he has had a key role in shaping budgets for human services and public health.

House Republican Leader Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) has re-appointed Rep. Mike May (R-Spirit Lake) as Ranking Member of the House Education committee.

"I'm pleased that Rep. May will be once again representing Republicans on the Education committee," said Leader Paulsen. "As a former school teacher, Mike brings with him an unique perspective and a wealth of knowledge about education issues."

May, who is serving his third term, will also serve on the House Economic Growth, Transportation and Natural Resources committees, as well as the Education Appropriations subcommittee.

"I care deeply about the education and well being of Iowa's students. I am committed to working in a bipartisan manner to do what's best for our children," said Rep. May. "My position on this committee will allow me to serve in a leadership role, and move our state forward, in a positive direction."

Johnson has also been re-appointed to the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and the Environment. An assistant minority leader, Johnson earlier this year was honored by the Izaak Walton League of America and by Conservation Districts of Iowa for his legislative advocacy for water quality, natural resources and soil conservation.

"Senator Johnson will continue to make outstanding contributions to several important committees. His leadership experience will be a true asset," said Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley (R-Chariton).

Johnson will also serve on the Appropriations, Education and Human Resources Committees.

Johnson represents Senate District 3, which includes all of Clay, Dickinson, O'Brien and Osceola counties, and eastern Sioux County.

May represents House District 6 including the northeast corner of Clay and all of Dickinson counties.
