Ms. Steffen passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorials to be directed to Hospice of Northwest Iowa or the American Cancer Society.
Shirley Mae Steffen, the daughter of Frank and Hilda (Matthiesen) Jessen, was born on March 3, 1925, in Hartley. She was raised and received her early education in Everly graduating from Everly High School. After graduation, she worked at the Post Office for a short time.
Shirley married Kenneth Steffen on Feb. 5, 1944, in Royal. Following their marriage they farmed in the Greenville area for about 3 years. In 1946, they relocated north of Everly where they farmed until 1979, then moved into Everly. Shirley was a homemaker.
She was very involved in the community, volunteering her time and was very instrumental in renovating the country school. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Everly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Polly Ann Teeple; her brother, Donal (Jim) Jessen; and nephew, Keith Jessen.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Burns and her husband, Lee of Orlando, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
