Kibbie, Frevert face challenges in Ruthven area

State Sen. Jack Kibbie, an Emmetburg Democrat, has filed to run for another term in Senate District 4.

He currently serves as President of the Iowa Senate and vice-chair of the rules and administration committee, as well as co-chair of the Ethics committee, and on State Government, Agriculture committees. Kibbie served in the Iowa House from 1961-1964 and the Senate from 1964-1968. He was re-elected in 1988 to the Senate. He served on the Iowa Lakes Community College Board for 17 years, serving as president for 10 of those years.

He faces a challenge from Ken Vaske of Algona, who is running as a Grassroots for Life candidate.

He is pro-life and opposes same-sex unions. He wants to reduce taxes and spending and supports school vouchers.

Iowa Senate in District 4 includes all of Emmet, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Humboldt and Pocahontas counties as well as Jackson, Deer Creek and Johnson townships in Webster county.

Ruthven-area voters also have a contested race in Iowa House District 7. Incumbent Marcella Frevert, an Emmetsburg Democrat, is seeking her seventh term. The retired elementary school teacher was first elected in 1996.

She is being faced by Debra Satern, an Estherville Republican. Satern is owner of Satern Custom Machining.

House District 7 includes all of Emmet County, all of Palo Alto County and most of Kossuth County.
