Services for Jeanette "Murf" Barber, 82 will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. Revs. .Peter Nguyen and Tom Geelan will officiate the service.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m., Tuesday with a Parish Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Ruthven.

Jeanette passed away on Sunday, Oct.r 26, 2008, at Spencer Hospital from effects caused by a stroke in 2005.

Helen Jeanette (Murphy) Barber, called "Murf" by her friends, the daughter of Morton and Emma (Soens) Murphy, was born Sept. 14, 1926 in Emmetsburg. She grew up in Emmetsburg and graduated from Catholic High School in 1944. During World War II Jeanette worked at Boeing in Omaha. On June 14, 1950 she married Thomas Richard Barber of West Bend. They made their first home in Iowa City while Rich attended the University of Iowa.

In 1952 Rich and Jeanette moved to Ruthven where they raised seven children and were active members of the community for over 50 years.

Jeanette was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven teaching religious education and participating in all women's functions.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Morton and Emma Murphy; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Lulu Barber; her sister, Louise Appelquist; and her brother, Francis.

Jeanette is survived by her husband, Rich of Ruthven; her daughter, Pat Custer and her husband, John of Indianapolis, Ind.; son, Tom Barber and his wife, Kathy of Aberdeen, S.D.; daughter, Marcia Hackett and her husband, Tom of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Mike Barber and his wife, Angela of Dallas, Texas; son, Duane Barber and his wife Robin, of Spencer; son, Roger Barber and his wife, Sara of Chicago, Ill.; and daughter, Sara Jakuc and her husband, Steve of Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers: Morton "Turk" Murphy and his wife, Alys of Madison, Wis., and Jack Murphy and his wife, Ann of San Diego, Calif.; and sisters, Cecilia Girres of North Richland Hills, Texas and Carol Schuller and her husband, Mark of Mallard.

Arrangements are being handled by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
