Band Boosters paper drive
The SHS Band Boosters are hosting a paper drive from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Please bring your newspapers and magazines to Complete Recovery at 712 E. Milwaukee St. in Spencer. Proceeds will help defray transportation costs for the marching band's trip to Walt Disney World in January.
Iowa Lakes Genealogy Society to meet
The Iowa Lakes Genealogy Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Spencer Public Library. Ron Reisinger will have a program on Dutch immigration to Iowa and the Midwest.
Spencer schools closed
Spencer Community Schools announced that there will be no school on Monday, Oct. 20 for a teacher inservice.
Library closed for staff training
The Spencer Public Library will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 21 for staff training. The library will re-open on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.
Dvergsten Day Care registrations
Registrations are still being accepted for the new Dvergsten Childcare Center. The new center will be opening very soon. Registrations can be picked up at the YMCA front desk or downloaded online at www.spencerymca.org. Deposits must be paid at the time of registration.
Spencer YMCA celebrates 'families'
For the month of October the Spencer Family YMCA is celebrating families. We are offering all new family members in the month of October a free family fun night: Pizza and movie to celebrate family togetherness.

Boot Camp offered
An adult fitness course boot camp is being held from 8:45-9:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the east gym of the Spencer Family YMCA. This adult fitness course is a combination of cardio and weight training. It consists of 45-second separate stations. Warm-up and cool-down sessions are also included in this class.

Displays sought for Festival of Trees
Festive displays are being sought for the fifth annual Festival of Trees sponsored by the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation. The events will be held at the Clay County Regional Events Center Nov. 13-15 with a Festival Tour of Homes on Nov. 15. Businesses, individuals and non-profit organizations are welcome to create a display for the Festival. Numerous events are planned to attract people to view the trees and displays including a Holiday Design Show, Festival Luncheon, Silent Auction, Morning with Santa and Holiday Tour of Homes. Decorated trees of all shapes and sizes are welcome as well as festively decorated tables and other displays.

Grief Support group meetings
Warner Funeral Homes & Crematory will again be offering a six-week grief support group open to anyone in Spencer or the surrounding communities who has experienced the loss of a loved one. The group will meet on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Spencer Area Activity Center, 1900 N. Grand Ave. in Spencer. Prior registration is appreciated but not required.

Third Day coming to Spencer
Christian rock band Third Day will be making a stop at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer with their Music Builds Tour on Saturday, Nov. 1. Special guests NeedToBreathe and Revive will open for Third Day. The three-hour show will start at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Customers can purchase tickets through the Events Center's Box Office (open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. -- 4 p.m.), at the Ticketmaster website (www.ticketmaster.com) charge-by-phone at 262-4554, or at all Ticketmaster outlets.
