Speeding stop leads to drug arrest

Monday, September 29, 2008 ~ Updated 11:02 AM
A speeding stop Wednesday resulted in the arrest of two teenage men from Correctionville and Quimby.

The Clay County K-9 Deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 3000 block of Hwy 18., and while attempting to stop the vehicle, the passenger, Kurt Bahrke, 19 Correctionville, threw a bag of what appeared to be marijuana from the vehicle. Bahrke was arrested after the marijuana was retrieved from the roadside.

The Clay County K-9 Max was then deployed to search the vehicle. More drugs and drug paraphernalia were recovered from the vehicle.

The driver, John Calandros Jr., 18, Quimby, was then subsequently arrested. Both subjects were taken to the Clay County Jail.

Calandros Jr. was charged with possession of marijuana, first offense, a serious misdemeanor; possession of drug paraphernalia; no insurance; and speed. He posted bond and was released.

Bahrke was charged with possession of marijuana, second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bahrke was unable to post bond and was jailed.

The Clay County Sheriff's office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department at the scene.
