Funeral services for Romola M. Grethen, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Peg Jackson will officiate the service.

Visitation will take place from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Emmetsburg.

Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemtery in Emmetsburg.

Romola passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.

Romola Maurine Grethen, daughter of John and Grace (Stafford) Overeen, was born Aug. 7, 1919, in Sac County. She graduated from Lake Center High School. Following graduation Romola attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching degree. Romola taught country school north of Dickens .

On June 29, 1942, Romola was united in marriage to Earl Jackson Grethen at the Christian Church in Spencer. To this union a son, Galen was born.

Romola was employed as a receptionist for Dr. Cretzmeyer for 13 years and then she worked at the Emmetsburg Medical Clinic for Dr. Coffey and Dr. Cozine. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Emmetsburg and was active in the women's guild at the church. Romola was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Emmetsburg and was a Gold Star Mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Overeen; her husband, Earl; her son, Galen Dean Grethen who was killed while serving in the Vietnam War in Phan Thiet; and three brothers: Gene, Drexel and John Overeen.

Romola is survived by two sisters: Helen Damstrom of Spencer, and Barbara Dotson of St. Louis Park, Minn.; a brother, William "Bill" Overeen and his wife, Margaret of Spencer; and two sisters-in-law: Augusta Overeen of Spencer, and Pearl Overeen of Hope Mills, S.C.

Arrangements are being handled by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
