Monte Montgomery, superintendent of Clay Central/Everly Community School District, was a nominee for the 2008-09 Iowa Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the School Administrators of Iowa.
"We are pleased to recognize school leaders who represent excellence in education," said Dan Smith, SAI executive director.
Montgomery's peers nominated him for the award, and he will be recognized at SAI's awards banquet in August 2009.
Under his leadership, the district has undertaken a variety of initiatives including additional K-12 reading and language arts strategies, a Positive Behavior Supports program, and math and science improvements. The district was one of the first in the state to receive an Iowa Learning Technology Grant and is among the earliest districts providing laptop computers to students. Beginning with the 2006-07 school year, each of the district's ninth through twelfth grade students received a laptop to use at school and home during the year.
Superintendent at Clay Central/Everly since 1997, Montgomery previously served as the district's middle school principal for two years. Prior to coming to Clay Central/Everly, he served as the first grade teacher in LuVerne and the K-8 building principal in Fremont.
Dr. Lane Plugge, superintendent of Iowa City Community School District, was selected as this year's award recipient.
SAI, a statewide organization founded in 1987, represents more than 2000 Iowa educational administrators. SAI's mission is to support, encourage and develop Iowa's educational leaders and learners.

Congratulations. A well-deserved recognition.
