Tigers place third at Charles City Invite

Spencer turned in nine medal-winning performances and piled up 438 points Saturday at the Charles City Invitational where swimming powerhouse Decorah sailed to its fourth straight meet crown.

The Vikings won 9 of 11 events and cruised to a 129-point victory over runner-up Waterloo Westm who recorded 491 points. Vinton-Shellsburg placed fourth behind the Tigers with 218 points, Charles City was fifth with 141.

Decorah held a decided advantage over the Tigers, and the rest of the field, in the freestyle events. The Vikings won both freestyle relays, while earning 10 top-five performances in the four individual freestyle events.

Spencer was the last team other than Decorah to win the Charles City Invitational, besting the meet hosts by 58 points in 2004.

Hollee Mohni gave Spencer its lone victory Saturday, winning the 50-yard Freestyle in a time of 27.62 seconds. Mohni took home four medals from the invitational, placing in the top three in three more events.

Mohni, Monica Harmon, Kalei Roskens and Hanna Cacek were runner-up to Decorah in the 200 Medley Relay. Mohni added a second-place finish in the 100 Butterfly before teaming with Cacek, Ann Magnuson and Sam Brigham to place third in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Brigham, Harmon, Roskens and Magnuson each claimed two medals Saturday; Cacek and Erin Rossiter won three apiece. Brigham, Harmon, Cacek and Rossiter turned in a runner-up performance in the 400 Freestyle Relay, while Rossiter also placed second in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke.

Spencer will be back in the pool Monday, hosting regional rival Carroll in the Tigers' first home meet of the season.
