Doris Ruth Whitaker, 85, of rural Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, in Hillsboro Baptist Church, with Rev. Duane LaCock officiating.
Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Visitation will open at 2 p.m. today at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present 4-5 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m.
She was born July 10, 1923, in Hillsboro to Alvah W. and Floy Helterbran Clark. She married William D. Whitaker Aug. 22, 1954, in Hillsboro Baptist Church. Ruth graduated from Hillsboro High School, Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant and did graduate work at University of Iowa, Iowa City and Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, Mo. Ruth taught in Hillsboro, Hartley, Mt. Pleasant and Harmony High Schools and Stockport Junior High.
She also assisted her husband on the family farm south of Hillsboro. She was a life-long member of Hillsboro Baptist Church and American Baptist Women, a 50 year member and Past Matron of Hillsboro Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, was currently a member of Stockport Chapter No. 544, and had been Mother Advisor of Bonaparte Assembly, Order of Rainbow for Girls. She was also a member of Chapter AB, P.E.O., Bonaparte, Hillsboro Alpha Club, Hillsboro Quilters, and Van Buren and Harmony Retired School Personnel Associations.
Her parents and a brother, Guy Clark preceded her in death.
Doris is survived by her husband; three sons: Clark Whitaker and wife, Norma, John Whitaker and wife, Lorrie of Hillsboro, and Bruce Whitaker and wife, Becky of Bentonsport; a daughter, Susan Zulk and husband, John of Spencer; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandson.
