Weapon use closes down highway

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 ~ Updated 8:25 AM
Members of the Spencer Police Department and deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office were among numerous agencies to respond to shots fired along Iowa Highway 86 in Dickinson County.

The highway begins for northbound traffic on the north edge of Milford and takes travelers along the west side of the Iowa Great Lakes.

Deputies were called at about 8:44 p.m. Saturday to the area of the highway near 130th Street. Two vehicles had stopped there and occupants were reporting their vehicle windows were shot while traveling southbound on Highway 86. The responding deputies requested assistance from neighboring agencies. Officers secured the scene and the Multi Agency Response Team (MART) was activated.

The MART officers cleared a perimeter in the area where the shooters were believed to be
located.

"Because of the possibility of shots fired, Highway 86 was shut down from Highway 9 to the Minnesota state line for approximately 5 hours," according to a statement from the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office.

Investigating officers determined that two 13-year-old boys had fired air rifles at passing
vehicles. The case remains under investigation and charges are expected.

No one was injured in the incident.

Along with Spencer-area officers, Dickinson County deputies were assisted by police departments from Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park and Milford.

Deputies from the Jackson County (Minn.) Sheriff's Department, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota and Iowa State Patrols, Dickinson County Emergency Management and the Iowa State Fire Marshal also assisted.

Iowa Great Lakes area fire and ambulance crews were on standby in case they were needed.

Violet, I think that the statement you made is the most need jerk, uneducated statement I have read for quite some time. The Constitution gives every American the right to bear arms. When the basic rights of our country are knee-jerked out of the Constitution, that is liberty dissappreaing in front of your eyes. The agument could be made that an age limit be set on these kinds of things, but that is not the answer. Education is the key that we need. To think that a basic right needs to be taken away because of some kids having a little bit of "fun" as they saw it, is as uneducated as it gets.

My sons were 6 and 7 when they got air rifles for Christmas. Along with the rifles came lots of education on when, where, and how to use them, how to clean them, and how to store them. If parents are willing to give them as gifts, they need to educate the kids as well.

You would be surprised at how many parents give these kids gifts like air rifles for Christmas and birthdays.
