The Spencer Community School Board of Education will convene its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the board room of the central administrative offices, located at 23 E. Seventh St. The evening will begin with a meeting in which the "retiring" board will approve consent items, including minutes from the Aug. 13 and Aug. 26 board meetings, bills, open enrollment requests, a transportation agreement with South Clay Community School District and personnel recommendations.
In personnel recommendations, board members will consider the resignation of Tara Davis as freshmen softball coach and the hiring of Debbie Moore, a teacher associate at Lincoln Elementary.
In an ensuing gathering, an abstract of the Sept. 9 special election for two at-large board positions will be reviewed. An oath of office will then be administered to newly-elected board members Todd Korbitz and Martha "Marti" Keninger Bomgaars. The board is then scheduled to elect a president and vice president. It will then determine the established time and date for future 2008-09 board meetings.
Following a time in which visitors may address the board, a representative from Positively Spencer Youth (PSY) is scheduled to present an update to the board. Principals from the district's buildings will then offer reports detailing recent past and future activities.
Mary Jo Smith, the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) chairperson, will offer a 2008-09 district professional development plan and district goals recommendation to the board. Appointment of the 2008-09 SIAC, including new members Dave Hessman, Gabrielle Bedore, Jean Fischer and Sue Nothwehr, is also expected.
Action is requested on a list of district fund-raisers for 2008-09.
Board members are also anticipated to cast a ballot for the district's representative on the Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency board. Superintendent Greg Ebeling is recommending incumbent Dean Saunders.
In other action items Tuesday, board members will hear a Cannon Moss Brygger & Associates proposal for a first-floor study of the old Spencer Middle School building, appoint a representative to attend the Iowa Association of School Boards Delegate Assembly, and adopt a district coach/activity sponsor evaluation instrument.
In the information/discussion segment of Tuesday's meeting, the board will receive information on focus groups scheduled to address updating of the district's vision and mission statements. A district newsletter proposal will be offered by Eric Johnson, the district's technology director. Board members will also schedule an October work session to discuss district patron communication, as well as review board goal progress and superintendent goals.
