With the return of top runner Taylor Chapman and 3-year starter Aaron Brockshus to their lineup, the Tigers turned in a top-five performance Tuesday at the Storm Lake Invitational, placing fourth in a field of 13.
Chapman, who sat out Spencer's last event with an ankle injury, paced the No. 10 Tigers with a fifth-place performance in a time of 17:02.70. Spencer's remaining four scoring runners all placed in the top 40.
Ryan McMahon and Algona proved to be too strong for the rest of the field, however, winning Tuesday's meet title with 42 points. McMahon, the state's second ranked runner in Class 3A, led the top ranked Bulldogs to a 3-point win over Spirit Lake Park.
The Indians, who dropped a spot to No. 3 in 2A despite a win over the Bulldogs last week, scored 45 points to finish ahead of MOC-Floyd Valley, who tallied 91 points.
Spencer came in behind the Dutch with 138 points, Carroll Kuemper scored 164 to round out the top five.
Carson Baethke turned in 27th-place finish for Spencer in 18:03.84. Joe Binzer was 32nd in 18:26.23, Cort Silliman was 36th and Cody Steinkamp was 38th. Alex Toay and Brockshus rounded out the lineup, placing 43rd and 47th, respectively.
