Harvey "Bob" Eckert, 82, of Spencer, passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. Mike Huebner will officiate the 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will be at Rush Lake Cemetery in rural Mallard.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Harvey Robert Eckert, the son of Harvey and Mamie (Larson) Eckert, was born July 20, 1926, in Mallard. He went to school in Mallard and graduated in May, 1944. A pitcher in school, he was signed with the Yankees Northern League as their pitcher in Grand Forks, N.D.

Mr. Eckert married Elvera Gade on Jan. 4, 1948, in Emmetsburg. Following their marriage, he farmed with his father, raising purebred Holstein cattle and showing at all area fairs. Involved in 4-H, he also raised purebred greyhounds. In 1987, the Eckerts retired to Spencer and began raising purebred Arabian horses.

Harvey Eckert was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard, and three sisters: Iola Hartmann, Elmyra Bergman and Eugene Eckert.

He is survived by his wife, Elvera, of Spencer; one son, Larry Eckert, of Phoenix; a daughter, Janice Kolander, and her husband, Myron, of Albert City; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Ferne Schuller; sisters-in-law: Margaret Eckert and Frances Myklestad; other relatives and friends.
