Police catch break in car theft probe

Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Members of the Spencer Police Department said they were able to recover more than 50 items that were stolen from cars in late August and early September.

Officers began following up on information regarding several car burglaries in the Spencer area late last week. Investigators used the information to issue warrants for 18-year-old Jeff Martin, Jr. of Tulsa, Okla.

As officers began the process of locating Martin, a call of a stolen truck came in at 7:14 a.m. Friday. Less than three hours later, the stolen truck was located by the Kansas Highway Patrol after the truck was involved in a gas drive-off. The driver was later identified as Martin. He was taken into custody by Kansas authorities.

Arrangements are being made to extradite Martin back to Clay County, according to a statement from Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson.

In addition to numerous burglary charges, a charge of second-degree theft has been filed. Police are in the process of trying to reunite the recovered items with the rightful owners.
