"Nashville Star" finalist Shawn Mayer is getting a chance to come home -- with the help of the Clay County Fair and local radio stations KICD, CD107.7 and Lite 104.9.
Mayer is from May City in rural Osceola County and finished third in NBC's country music competition series this summer. Barring any travel snafus, Mayer will sign autographs from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the KICD Courtyard stage on the fairgrounds.
Fans can bring something of their own to autograph. Mayer also will have publicity photos available that she will sign. Her supporters are welcome to bring a camera along for a snapshot of the meet-and-greet as well.
While the show's exposure is life-changing for a young artist, the network's paychecks don't allow the local singer many opportunities to fly home, according to the local radio stations' operations manager, Kevin Tlam.
She's anxious to get home to see family, friends and fans because Shawn's family only had about 10-15 minutes with her when NBC taped a homecoming episode and concert on July 23. The highlights from northwest Iowa were included in the July 28 episode of "Nashville Star."
The show brought Mayer's family out to Nashville for a couple of the show's live broadcasts, but, again, contestant preparations limited the amount of time Mayer had for her family.
"She really didn't get to see them very much," Tlam said.
Fans who miss Sunday's autograph session have two more chances to see Mayer: She will stay on the fairgrounds to sing the national anthem prior to the Jason Aldean concert Sunday night.
She's also coming back to Spencer for an 8 p.m. performance Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Clay County Regional Events Center as part of the "Nashville Star" concert tour.
Pre-sale ticket orders began Friday, Aug. 8. Tickets go on sale beginning Sept. 15, which is the Monday after the 2008 Clay County Fair comes to a conclusion. Fellow contestants Melissa Lawson, Gabe Garcia and Coffey are joining Mayer on the concert tour.
