The Spencer Community Schools Board of Education will convene its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26 in the board room of the central administrative offices, located at 23 E. Seventh St.
Approval of consent items, including minutes from the July 24 and Aug. 13 board meetings, bills, student open enrollment applications, and personnel recommendations will be sought.
In personnel recommendations, board members will consider the resignations of teacher associates Barbara Larson, Valerie Johnson and Michael Knipe, and the hirings of teacher associates Terryn Mohni, Deb Barber and Rachel Hodges, as well as the hiring of Amy Metcalf, as an individual speech coach, and Chad Huckfelt, as an eighth grade football coach. The board will also consider transferring Connie Stave and Mary Mingus from cook to head cook positions, and Curtis Frerichs and Kim Stoever from part-time to full-time teacher associate positions. In addition, board members will contemplate horizontal moves totaling $23,678 for David Munson, Michele Dirkx, Susan Coulander, Sally Hamilton, Elina Ozolins, Sheryl Patten, Lisa Horst, Debra Garnatz, Kim Weeks, Lois Glover, Teresa Trierweiler, Tracy Johnson, Kurt Bauermeister, Kathy Druvenga and Cindy Glover.
Following a time in which visitors may address the board, building principals, Assistant Superintendent Kathy Elliott and a representative from Positively Spencer Youth will present updates to board members. A discussion about student achievement is expected to follow.
Action on the expulsion of a Spencer High School student for the first semester of 2008-09 will occur. The student is accused of possessing marijuana.
Representatives from the Northwest Iowa Youth Soccer Alliance will request board members purchase new bleachers for the new soccer fields. The bleacher project is expected to cost around $35,000 for materials and installation, plus an additional cost for concrete.
The board is also anticipated to act on quotes from Ver Steeg Construction and Moser Construction to replace press box windows at the district's softball and baseball diamonds.
Following action on an FEH Associates Inc. design study proposal for the Spencer Middle School auditorium, school board members are scheduled to discuss the Sept. 9 election and issue focus group name recommendations for future work on the district vision and mission statements.
