Six area athletes earn All-District honors

Tuesday, August 19, 2008
A half-dozen local athletes were recognized for their on-the-field softball performances earlier this off-season with three Spencer players, two Okoboji girls and Sioux Central ace Brooke Scharn earning All-District honors in their respective classes.

Seniors Emily Wassom, Liz Doppenberg and Kellie Carstens were named to the Class 3A All-North District Team. Senior Amanda Von Ehwegen and junior Jenny Brons represented Okoboji on the Class 2A All-Northwest District, while Scharn was tabbed as one of seven pitchers on the same squad.

Wassom hit .430 with 37 hits, 29 runs, 27 RBI and one home run, leading the team in runs. Wassom, a shortstop, carried a .916 fielding percentage.

Carstens led the Tigers with a .434 batting average, 43 hits and 30 RBI. She added 24 runs, two home runs, five stolen bases and a .960 fielding percentage.

Doppenberg, Spencer's catcher, finished tied for second on the team with two home runs and 29 RBI. She added a .395 batting average, eight doubles and a .959 fielding percentage.

The senior trio led Spencer to a 24-10 season and guided the Tigers to their first playoff win in seven years in 2008.

Scharn dominated both at the plate and in the circle, leading Sioux Central with a .408 batting average, 53 hits, 52 runs, five home runs, 11 stolen bases, 27 stolen bases and a .746 slugging percentage. She added 20 RBI and seven doubles. Scharn finished 29-9 overall, with a 0.71 ERA, 238 strikeouts and a .158 average against. She helped lead Sioux Central to a 30-win season and to the regional semifinals before falling to Emmetsburg, a state tournament participant.

Okoboji added two players to the Class 2A All-Northwest District with Amanda Von Ehwegen earning honors at pitcher and Jenny Brons getting recognition in the infield.

Von Ehwegen, the Pioneers' ace, went 19-6 with a 1.49 ERA in 160 innings. She added two saves, 123 strikeouts and a .209 batting average against.

Brons posted a .434 batting average with 49 hits, 37 runs, 43 RBI, six home runs, nine doubles and a .975 fielding percentage. Okoboji went 25-8 behind Brons and Von Ehwegen, bowing out of the Class 2A postseason to Sioux Central the state's only first-round matchup pitting ranked teams.

I find the All District Honors interesting,Jami Webster's stats were as good or better than some on the list, I believe the coach has to nominate you for the honor I know the all state form is that way. Jami got robbed many times for all of the hard work she put in pitching for five years, I believe she pitched the only Regonial game ever won by the Spencer Coach by throwing 10 strike outs, then got benched for the second game, after a mess was created by the Coach's actions, she was put in to try and save the game, Jami and the rest of the Seniors that played together for all those years deserved a lot better than they got.
