Farmers Market held every Wednesday and Saturday

The Spencer Area Farmers Market will be held every Wednesday and Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the Southpark Mall parking lot. Come see the homegrown, fresh produce for sale.


Sacred Heart School Registration

Registration for all Sacred Heart Elementary School pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students will be held from 12-6 p.m. today, in the school library.

Visually Impaired/Blind Self-help Group

The Spencer Area Visually Impaired/Blind Self-Help Group will hold their August meeting at 12:30 p.m. today. This meeting is the annual picnic to be held at the shelter in East Leach Park. Individuals with vision loss are invited to attend to meet with the group and be informed about our purpose.

Hospice of Northwest Iowa offers grief support group

Losing a loved one is indescribable to someone who has not felt the loss of death. Hospice of Northwest Iowa's professional team understands the tragedy of losing a loved one and they identify with the difficult decisions and emotions that the person left behind faces. To help people cope with the death of a loved one, Hospice of Northwest Iowa is offering an 8-week Understanding Grief Support Group. The group will meet each Wednesday evening beginning Aug. 6 through Sept. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m.

AOG artist reception

The public is cordially invited to attend the artist reception for Jeanne Norris Larson at Arts on Grand, 408 N. Grand Ave. in Spencer from 5-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 with the gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. Jeanne is the daughter of Charles (Art) and Esther Larson, who moved from Spencer in the mid 60's. Jeanne would have graduated with the class of 66.


American Legion Bingo cancelled

American Legion Bingo in Sioux Rapids will be closed for the rest of the summer, but will resume Sept. 17.


Glass Slipper Project

Lakes Area Glass Slipper Project is now collecting "tenderly worn" prom dresses that will go to help young girls attend their prom. Every young lady deserves to be "Queen" for a day at her prom. Please help us make a girls dream come true!

This project was started by the Kinship girls of 2008 with hope to provide prom dresses for those girls who may not be able to afford them.


IGLLS Registration

Registration for the 2008-2009 school year at Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran Elementary School in Spencer will take place from 12-5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12.The school is located at 500 Fourth Ave. SW at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer.

Hall Family Benefit Dinner and Auction

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hartley, is sponsoring a community-wide benefit for the family of Jan Hall to help defray medical bills incurred during Jan's battle with illness. The free-will dinner and auction will be held at the Hartley Community Center on Thursday, Aug. 14. The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be providing matching funds for a portion of the donations. A dinner of roasted pork sandwiches, cheesy potatos, baked beans, pasta salaed, ice cream and bars will be served from 5-8 p.m. Carry outs will be available. A free-will offering bake sale of delicious goodies will be held during the dinner. At 7 p.m. a live-auction for a variety of donated items and services will begin, with Ron Sterk as the auctioneer. It's not too late to donate items or services for the auction.

Iowa Great Lakes Money Show

The 29th Annual Iowa Great Lakes Coin, Postcard, Stamp, and Paper Money Show will be on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug.17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located in the Community Building, one block north of the Hwy 9 Hy-Vee in Spirit Lake.
