Funeral services for Edward "Ed" Grapevine, 87, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Windom, Minn., were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Windom. Rev. Stephen Norby officiated the service.

Interment followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom with full military honors.

Edward passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his residence in Spirit Lake.

Edward Andrew Grapevine was born on Dec. 21, 1920, the oldest of nine children, in Ida Grove, to the late Charles O. and Bernice (Higgins) Grapevine. He enlisted in the Army-Air Corps in 1940 and served his country during World War II. He was part of the crew on the first plane, "Battlin Bonnie" (B-29), to land in Japan after the bombing of that country in World War II. Through his military career, Ed was a radio man and received many medals and presidential citations while serving in the Pacific Theatre on Tinian Island. Ed was honorably discharged in 1945 and received his GED shortly thereafter at Iowa Lakes in Estherville, Iowa.

On April 21, 1943, Ed was united in marriage to Mavis N. Kingery at the Baptist Parsonage in Windom while Ed was on furlough. They became the proud parents of three children. Through the years, Ed and Mavis lived in several areas including Storden, Windom, Westbrook, Moorhead, Spencer and Humboldt; and finally back to Windom in 1983. In those many years, Ed fixed radios, drove bus, worked for Farm Bureau, and finally was a feed salesman until a back injury forced him to retire.

On March 19, 2007, Mavis passed away and Ed continued to live in Windom for a short time after before moving to Spirit Lake, to be closer to his children.

Ed was a longtime, faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Windom and the American Legion Post 206 in Windom.

Ed is survived by his two children, Jonette Tielbur and husband, Jerry, of Spencer, and Gary Grapevine and wife, Sue, of Arnolds Park; daughter-in-law, Beth Mullenax of Rifle, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Missling and husband, Arlen of Blaine, Minn.; three brothers: Richard Grapevine and wife, Karen, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Gerald Grapevine and wife, Francy, of Corning, N.Y., and Larry Grapevine and wife, Kathy, of Northome, Minn.; and three sister-in-laws: Nancy Grapevine of Elkand, Pa., Marian Kingery of Atwater, Minn., and Lois Kingery of Windom.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mavis Grapevine; one son, Ronald Grapevine; one great-granddaughter, Sabreena Grapevine; and four brothers: Charles "Junior" Bill, Leland, and John Grapevine.
