Richard H. "Dick" Roder, 74, of Alta, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the St. Luke's Regional Medical Center of Sioux City
Funeral services for Richard H. "Dick" Roder will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at the United Methodist Church of Alta.
Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery of Alta.
Richard was born Aug. 31, 1933, in Marathon, the son of Floyd and Harriet Roder. He married Dorothy Clark on March 21, 1959, in Hollywood, Calif.
He was a 1952 graduate of Marathon High School, and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa in 1956. While attending college, Richard pitched for the Hawkeye baseball team. He continued his baseball career with the Storm Lake White Caps and eventually turned down an opportunity to play for the Dodger's minor league organization. Richard also found time to attain a pilot's license and an electrician's license.
While living in California, he was employed as an engineer, working on missile guidance systems. He moved his family back to Iowa in 1964 and taught high school science for 33 years, 21 of which were in Alta.
Richard was a member of the Methodist Church in Alta and was always working on a project.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Richard is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy; their four children: Susan Roder of Aurelia; Jon Roder and wife, Karen of Cedar Rapids, Mike Roder and wife, Gail of Washington, and Mark Roder and wife, Shannon of Wellsburg; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Charles and Loy Roder or Arnolds Park.
