Betty McWhorter, 86, of Sutherland, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City.

Services will be held today, Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the Church of Christ in Sutherland, with Rev. Mathew St. John officiating the service. Her funeral will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 at the Baptist Temple Church of San Benito, Texas. Burial will be at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito at graveside services following her funeral.

Mrs. Betty Rose McWhorter, the daughter of William and Mary (Studebaker) Morey, was born July 31, 1921, in Kokomo, Ind. She married H.A. "Mac" McWhorter on Oct. 22, 1947, in Harlingen, Texas. The couple lived in Harlingen for a few years, but resided in San Benito, Texas for the majority of their marriage. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. McWhorter moved to Uvalde, Texas and resided there until moving to Sutherland in 2004.

She enjoyed participating in church activities at Baptist Temple Church in San Benito and at Baptist Temple Church in Uvalde.

Mrs. McWhorter was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a baby girl in Indiana; sons: Theodore McWhorter of Uvalde, Michael McWhorter of Brazoria, and Lawrence McWhorter of Hesperia, Calif.; sister Lois Macy, brother Gene Morey and grandson Charles Cook of San Benito.

Betty McWhorter is survived by daughters: Anne McWhorter, Phyllis Bradshaw, Mary Jo McWhorter and Terry Hertel; sister: Mona Newburger of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
