Trooper hurt in Spirit Lake crash

Wednesday, July 9, 2008 ~ Updated 9:28 AM

A trooper with the Iowa State Patrol is back at work after a fender-bender and medical evaluation Monday afternoon.

Tropper Bob Subbert transported fellow trooper Brian Lee Axford, 30, Spirit Lake to Lakes Regional Healthcare after the collision, which occurred at 11:59 a.m. Monday at the multi-lane intersection of Highway 9 and 71, near Wal-Mart, in Spirit Lake.

"He was treated and released," said Lt. Darin Fratzke, the Post 6 commander in Spencer. "He went right back to work. He had a possible complaint of pain on his ankle. He got it all checked out and everything was fine. His airbags did not deploy."

Troopers think a southbound 2002 Buick driven by 80-year-old Roy Milton Boles of Spirit Lake ran through a stop sign at the intersection.

The Buick sustained $5,000 damage. The eastbound patrol car sustained $8,000 damage.

The collision essentially took the front bumper off the car and pushed the radiator back, according to Fratzke.

"Other than that, it was limited to front-end damage only," he said.

Boles was cited for running a stop sign.
