Vera Brackey, 79, passed away June 17, 2008, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Michael Yilek, in Dubuque where she had resided since December, 2007.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Laurens.
Visitation is Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home.
The daughter of Robert and Mildred Alger, Vera was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Dickens. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1946 and married Harley Brackey the following year. Together, they built a life around their three children and Harley's work at M & J R Hakes in Laurens.
Following her husband's death in 1983, she sponsored the Cobra Day Golf Tournament in Laurens in his memory, an event that took place every Father's Day for the past 23 years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Harley; parents, Robert and Mildred Alger; brothers: Glen Alger, Gale Alger, Earl (Bud) Alger, and Robert Alger; sister-in-law, Shirley Alger; son-in-law, Dwight Alborn; and daughter-in-law, Judy Brackey.
Vera is survived by her children: Roger Brackey, William Brackey and wife, Debra, and Sue Alborn-Yilek and husband, Michael; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sisters-in-law: Connie Alger, Cleone Alger and Rose Alger.
Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
