Farmer's Market Wednesdays and Saturdays

The Spencer Area Farmer's Market will be held every Wednesday and Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the Southpark Mall parking lot. Come see the homegrown, fresh produce for sale.

Mercy Me to headline northwest Iowa's RiseFest

RISE Ministries and Northwestern College will co-sponsor the fourth annual RiseFest today with musical headliners MercyMe, Go Fish and several other bands, an extreme sports area, Kids Zone, seminars and speaker Rob Roozeboom. The event will take place at the Northwestern College soccer complex and will begin with a 5K/10K run at 8 a.m. The musical lineup for RiseFest 2008 will also include the popular children-oriented Go Fish; DecembeRadio, winner of the 2007 Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year; pop/rock band Addison Road, whose single "All That Matters" is in the top 10 of Christian contemporary hit radio charts; and hip-hop band Group 1 Crew. More bands will be announced at a later date. Tickets are on sale at www.riseministries.com and local bookstores.

Benefit for Kellie Powers

Today, Fareway, Longhouse, and the Bethany Lutheran Church of Spencer will be having a benefit for Kellie Powers. They will be grilling burgers and having homemade baked goods at the Bomgaars location in Spencer from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Travis Powers, son of Kellie Powers, is also going to be having a free concert at this time. All events are a free will donation to help cover the medical expenses for Kellie's recent hospitalization. The Clay County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Branch No. 31133 and the Community State Bank will be providing additional funds.

Angel Food Ministry

The First Christian Church at 701 E. 18th St., Spencer is hosting the Angel Food Ministry" from 12-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21; 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2; 5-7 p.m., Saturday, July 5; and from 9-10 a.m. and 12-1 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. You can order boxes of food that contain fresh meats, fresh or frozen fruits & vegetables, & staple items at an extremely low price! This is not "day-old" or "outdated" food. Each box contains approximately $65 worth of groceries for only $30. You will be able to pick up the food ordered, from 1:30-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. Each month you will have an opportunity to order food.

Genealogy meeting

The Iowa Lakes Genealogy Society will have a field trip to Lake Park to their new Library and the museum at 1:30 p.m. today. For those who want to carpool from Spencer, please be at the parking lot south of the Library before 12:30 p.m. as we will leave at 12:30 for points north.

Relay for Life raffle

The "Lucky Pennies" at Farmers Bank are holding a raffle for their Relay for Life team. To be raffled are two hand-blown wine goblets donated by Bogenrief Studios, and a Vera Bradley makeup case donated by the Hen House. You can view the items and purchase tickets at Medlar Studios/Plaster Shop.

Cemtery Preservation Workshop

Cemetery Preservation Workshop at Steuck Prairie Land Cemetery will take place from 8-11 a.m., today. Get out from under your umbrella and rain jacket and join us for a day of learning about native prairie flowers and grasses; family history; and cemetery preservation. The day will begin with a brief talk about the family that settled the area; then DNR personnel will give a short presentation about the prairie plants in the area; and will round out with the beautification project and children activities. The beautification project will include; trimming a few trees, trimming around headstones and family plots, and removing non-native plants. The children activities will include; mapping the headstones and conducting headstone chalk rubbings. Bring: Water, sunscreen, work gloves, work clothes, blanket, and tools. Registration: $5 for individual or $10 a family.

Getting ready to 'Rock, Rumble and Roll'

Bikers, riders and drivers are preparing to Rock, Rumble and Roll today in the Iowa Great Lakes Region. The poker run and concert benefits the Iowa RockNRoll Music Association Museum in Arnolds Park. Participants in the poker run will register at Okoboji Harley-Davidson between 10-11:30 a.m. The ride consists of five stops, including a Queen II ride. Prize money is $200 and the first 100 registered will receive a T-shirt. Several door prizes have been donated by area businesses. The day concludes with a concert in the Roof Garden at Arnolds Park. Headlining is the fabulous Generations of RockNRoll show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, with poker run participants admitted free. All proceeds from the event and raffle will go toward day-to-day operational expenses of the museum.

VFW pancake breakfast

The Clay County VFW Post 3159 will host a pancake breakfast, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sunday, June 22. Pancakes, eggs, sausage and ham will be served with coffee or juice. Free will donation, the public is welcome.

Abben survivors celebrate 'Seed of Hope'

The Abben Cancer Center in Spencer's fourth annual cancer survivor's day celebration "Seed of Hope" has been postponed to Wednesday, June 25. Join the staff at the Abben Cancer Center at 6:30 p.m. in the Spencer Hospital's Grand Avenue Park. Music will be performed by Laura Carlentini, Ryan Sather and Jack Ryan as you stroll through the gardens. There will be a short program with a dedication of the park benches in the meditation garden to honor all cancer survivors around 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
