Lela Mae Hughes, 88, former Spen-cer resident, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Tulare, Calif.

Cremation has taken place. A private service and celebration of her life is being planned. Those wishing to send condolences to the family may do so at jm.meyer@sympatico.ca.

Lela was born in Estherville on Oct. 8, 1919, to Harold and Lola (Barnes) Shriner and graduated from Moneta High School as Class Valedictorian in 1937. She was united in marriage to Melvin L. (Mel) Hughes on July 3, 1937, in Sioux City. They were married 61 years and lived most of their lives in the Spencer and Spirit Lake area, raising four children who all graduated from Spencer High School. Mel and Lela owned and operated a number of restaurants in northwest Iowa before retiring to farm and raise beef cattle. After spending several winters in Phoenix, Ariz., they established permanent residency there in 1979.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; her parents; her sister, Althea Johnson of Webb; her brother, Donavon Shriner of New Ulm, Minn.; and her son-in-law, Dick (Andy) Anderson of Tulare, Calif.

Lela is survived by her children: Geraldine (Gerry) Anderson of Tulare, Calif., Gary Hughes and wife, Monica of Savannah, Ga., Karilyn Christenson and husband, David of Elk Rapids, Mich., and Jeannette Meyer and husband, Donald of Richards Landing, Ontario, Canada; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Leon Shriner and wife, Millie of Bella Vista, Ark., and Edwin Shriner of Chesterfield, Mo.; her sister, Joanne Wohlert of Spirit Lake; and sister-in-law, Joyce Shriner of New Ulm, Minn.

Peers-Lorentzen Funeral Home in Tulare is in charge of arrangements.
