Abben survivors celebrate 'Seed of Hope'

The Abben Cancer Center in Spencer's fourth annual cancer survivor's day celebration "Seed of Hope" has been postponed to Wednesday, June 25. Join the staff at the Abben Cancer Center at 6:30 p.m. in the Spencer Hospital's Grand Avenue Park. Music will be performed by Laura Carlentini, Ryan Sather and Jack Ryan as you stroll through the gardens. There will be a short program with a dedication of the park benches in the meditation garden to honor all cancer survivors around 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Friday Night Couples Golf

Friday Night Couples Golf at Spencer Muni Course starts tonight. Any couples wishing to join, be there at 6 p.m.

Angel Food Ministry

The First Christian Church is again hosting the Angel Food Ministry from 5-7 p.m., June 7, and 9-10 a.m. and 12-1 p.m., June 8. The public can order boxes of food that contain fresh meats, fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, and staple items at an extremely low price. This is not "day-old" or "outdated" food. Each box contains approximately $65 worth of groceries for only $30. You will be able to pick up the food ordered, from 1:30-3 p.m., June 21. Each month you will have an opportunity to order food.


Canoe float Saturday

A canoe float is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 7 on the West Des Moines River between Graettinger and Emmetsburg. Meet at the river bridge east of Graettinger on B14. Must be experienced to canoe. Reserve a canoe or bring your own.

SCT auditions for "AristoCats"

Spencer Community Theatre will be holding auditions for the summer Children's Musical: Disney's The Aristocats. Auditions will be at 6 p.m., Monday June 9 and at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday June 10. Auditions will be held at Spencer Community Theatre, 518 1st Children ages 6-14 are eligible to audition for and participate in AristoCats, Disney's comedic animal tale based on the Disney film of the same name. Children will be asked to sing, dance, and act at the audition. No prepared scenes or songs are required. Parents should bring schedules and rehearsal conflicts to the auditions. Auditions will begin promptly at 6 p.m. at Spencer Community Theatre. It is not necessary to attend both nights of auditions; one or the other will suffice. All children ages 6-14 are welcome to audition.

County Democrats to meet

The Clay County Democratic Party will meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 9 at 419 E. Second St.


Gypsy Dave and the Sumpjumpers

Gypsy Dave and the Stumpjumpers have traveled all the way from Pennsylvania and will be performing at Shaky Tree Coffee at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7. Come enjoy their roots/folk/Americana music and you will hear why they have been steadily climbing the charts. Check out their website at www.thegypsydave.com. No cover charge just a suggested donation of $5 per person.

Prairie Lakes Audubon Field Trip

All are welcome to attend the Prairie Lakes Audubon Chapter field trip, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at the Prairie Heritage Nature Center located at Peterson (3 1/2 miles northwest on Highway 10, 1 mile north on Yellow Ave.). A "bring your own sack lunch" picnic will be followed by a tour and program presented by Naturalist Charlene Elyea. Carpoolers meet at the east end of the Great Lakes Mall parking lot in Spirit Lake at 5:30 p.m.


Beth Snow-Ketchum benefit

A 5-kilometer walk and run, bake and book sale benefit for Beth Snow-Ketchum will be held on Saturday, June 7. The race will begin at 8 a.m at the Spencer Family YMCA located at 1001 11th Ave W, with registration to begin at 7 a.m. Snow-Ketchum, a special education teacher at Johnson Elementary, was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer. Everyone is welcome to enter; walkers, competitive and non-competitive runners alike are encouraged to participate. A T-shirt is included with the event's entry fee. Volunteers are needed to help with the event and donations will be appreciated.
