People For Pets volunteer training
People for Pets, Spencer, is in need of volunteers who love animals. If you have a few hours a week to commit to helping homeless cats and dogs in our shelter, please attend one of our volunteer training sessions. Choose either 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 4 or 10 a.m., Saturday, June 7. Sessions will be at the shelter and will last about an hour. The animals need your help and you will receive the satisfaction of giving some time and love to animals while they wait for their forever home.

Abben survivors celebrate 'Seed of Hope'
On Thursday, June 5, the Abben Cancer Center in Spencer will be hosting its forth annual cancer survivor's day celebration "Seed of Hope". Hundreds of communities worldwide will join at that time to celebrate life as part of the National Cancer Survivor's Day. Join the staff at the Abben Cancer Center at 6:30 p.m. in the Spencer Hospital's Grand Avenue Park. Music will be performed by Laura Carlentini, Ryan Sather and Jack Ryan as you stroll through the gardens. There will be a short program with a dedication of the park benches in the meditation garden to honor all cancer survivors around 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Paws for the Cause
The Clay County Relay for Life "Out of the Blue" team is sponsoring a dog show. "Paws for the Cause" will be held at Oneota Park in Spencer from 2 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 8. Activities will include a costume pet parade, an agility competition, and a retrieving and obedience contest. Trophies and prizes will be awarded.

AARP meeting scheduled
The local chapter of AARP will meet Monday, June 9 at the Spencer Activity Center. The board will meet at 9 a.m. Social hour begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program at 10 a.m. The featured speaker will be state Rep. Mike May, a Spirit Lake Republican. The public is invited to attend.
June Employers' Council to focus on ESGR
The June 11 Employers' Council meeting will be Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which will deal with topics timely and relevant to the area. This meeting is free to the public. The time is from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is no cost for the meal served or program. The topic will center on how area businesses can help veterans returning from the war transition back into society. There are speakers and resources available to area employers regarding these topics. Since there are units returning to the Estherville area this summer, this topic is especially timely. Blood drive set for Spencer
The Siouxland Community Blood Bank will be holding a blood drive from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Southpark Mall in Spencer. To be eligible to donate blood, individuals must be at least 16 years of age. Donors under the age of 17 require parental consent. In addition, donors need to weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated whole blood in the past 56 days. A photo I.D. is required at the time of registration.
MS support group
A regional multiple sclerosis (MS) support group will be hosting Dr. Bruce Hughes from the Ruan MS Center in Des Moines. He will present from 9 - 11 a.m. on June 14 at King's Pointe, 1520 E. Lakeshore Dr., Storm Lake.
